Steam Ship Yola, carrying a cargo of wheat, left New York on 26th January, 1917 and was never seen again. Nor was any trace of her ever found. One report has her being sunk on 7th February by the German submarine U-55, west of Ushant in the far west of the English Channel but there is also speculation that she hit an iceberg or was lost in a storm. Her owners, Elder Dempster of Liverpool record her as being lost on 28th January, 1917 with all 33 members of her crew. One of these was R Pettigrew. |
